Lion Dances, Fire Engines, and the HK Flower Show — Family Weekend 21–22 March
Cloudy weekend coming up, 20–24 degrees. Good news: most of the best stuff this weekend is either indoors or happens regardless of weather.
Ap Lei Chau: Hung Shing Cultural Festival
Ap Lei Chau is celebrating the Hung Shing festival — a traditional celebration seeking blessings from the deity for good weather and peace in the neighbourhood. Expect dragon boats, lion dances, a high pole lion dance competition, water lantern blessings, and a parade. My kid has been re-enacting the lion dance she saw over Lunar New Year every morning — so we’re definitely going.
Kai Tak: Fire Services Open Day
Co-organised by the HK Fire Services Department at Kai Tak Station Square.
- Sunday 22 March, 2pm–5pm, free
- Kids in mini firefighter uniforms
- Ride-on fire engines
- Game booths with balloons and toys
- Search-and-rescue dog demonstrations
Arrive early and bring snacks — there will be queues.

Kai Tak: Free HK Chinese Orchestra Concert
HKCO is attempting a World Record at Kai Tak Sports Park, featuring sheng (reed instrument) performances. The main concert is at 4:30pm at East Village — free, and the whole event runs 2:15pm–6pm.
Good one to combine with the Fire Services open day if you’re heading to Kai Tak.
Causeway Bay: HK Flower Show
Running 20–29 March, 9am–9pm at Victoria Park. Entry is $14. Features pandas climbing flower mountains, windmill flowers, and lions made entirely of flowers. It’s quite amazing — and even fun for kids who would otherwise have zero interest in flowers.
Coming Up: Ice Cream Factory (Lantau/Kwai Tsing)
Fully booked this weekend, but worth flagging for a future one: a local ice cream factory tour where you make ice cream and eat unlimited popsicles. About US$58 per person.
