Art Basel, Puppet Theatre, and Spring Harvests — HK Family Weekend 28–29 March

This week marks the start of HK Arts Festival so there are lots of fun events and activities the whole family can get involved in. I’ve listed some kid-friendly art things to go for — but art is for all ages. If something catches your eye, just bring them along. Chances are they’ll love it because you love it, and you’ll actually get to do what you want to do too.

Wanchai: Art Kids at Art Basel Hong Kong

Art Basel is on this weekend (public days Friday–Sunday) and before you scroll past because “that’s not for kids” — have you heard of Art Kids at Art Basel Hong Kong? A fully supervised, educational guided tour programme for children aged 5–12, run by Colour My World professionals. It encourages kids to look, think, and talk about art in meaningful ways, without you nervously keeping them away from million-dollar sculptures.

Capacity is limited — book in advance.

West Kowloon: WestK FunFest

West Kowloon is genuinely delivering this weekend. Quick highlights because there’s a lot of free stuff:

  • Retro family games area
  • Free 30-minute Cantonese opera movement workshop
  • Free performances: dance, skipping, music, and juggling
  • Inflatable robot cats

Ticketed shows worth booking ahead: Spare Parts Puppet Theatre – Rules of Summer ($280), Playful Tiger by Barrowland Ballet ($100), Bob Marley for Babies ($280), To Copy by Animal Religion ($280), Snowmelt by ALAN ($380). Only the first two are this weekend — the rest are for upcoming weekends.

Central: PMQ Printmaking Workshop

Rather than signing your kid up for a “kid-friendly” art class, why not do something the whole family can enjoy? This is an experimental workshop where your everyday objects become your artwork tools — materials provided, but you can also bring your own objects to print with, plus a tote bag, t-shirt, or any fabric item you’d like to customise.

No mess in your house, and it’s run by a non-profit art organisation (HKWALLS). $212 per person.

New Territories: Spring Harvest at Kadoorie Farm

A slightly different vibe for families who want to get out of the city. Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden is running a Spring Harvest experience — visit the terraced vegetable fields, learn about local seasonal vegetables, and actually harvest fresh organic vegetables yourself (3 catties per participant to take home).

  • $140 per person + entrance fee
  • Suitable for ages 3+, under-12s must be accompanied by a parent
  • Sessions capped at 15 people
  • Language is Cantonese (google translate does the job)

Still On: Flower Show + Hung Shing Festival

Carrying over from last weekend:

  • Hong Kong Flower Show at Victoria Park — magic shows, balloon twisting, bouncy games
  • Hung Shing Festival at Ap Lei Chau — this weekend’s focus is Cantonese Opera (last weekend was the lion dances, which were a blast)
