If you’ve been quietly Googling this at midnight because a number came up in a WhatsApp group and made your stomach drop, you’re not the only one. Hong Kong kindergarten fees vary by more than $200,000 a year depending on which door you walk through, and the schools at the top of that range don’t exactly advertise it. Here’s the actual ranking, in Hong Kong dollars and US dollars, plus the costs that never make it onto the glossy PDF.

But a ranked list of the priciest schools isn’t the same thing as a plan — understanding how the Hong Kong system actually works, what makes sense for your family’s budget and priorities, and how to pick the right school rather than the most expensive one is a separate (and honestly more useful) question. The real cost isn’t the tuition — it’s everything stacked on top of it

Every ranking like this one, including this one, is built on published tuition. What it can’t fully capture is what a family actually pays in year one, because almost every school in this list charges for more than just the classroom.

Debentures. Some of the most prestigious schools on this list — and several not on it — sell debentures: a one-time capital sum that either buys your child priority admission or exempts you from an annual capital levy. These range enormously, from a refundable-ish HK$500,000 at the lower end up to eight-figure “Golden Jubilee” certificates north of HK$20 million at the most exclusive schools. Some are fully refundable when your child leaves, some are only partially refundable, and some (development debentures) aren’t refundable at all. This is a decision that deserves its own conversation with a school’s business office — not something to guess at from a blog post.

Capital levies. Separate from debentures, most schools also charge an annual, non-refundable capital levy on top of tuition — typically somewhere between HK$20,000 and HK$60,000 a year. This is the figure I’ve folded into the “annual cost” numbers below, because unlike a debenture, it’s not optional and you’ll pay it every single year. Worth knowing: at some schools this levy is front-loaded — new families pay a higher rate in the early years, and it steps down once your child is established at the school. Don’t assume year one’s number is what you’ll be paying for the next decade.

Application and deposit costs. Application fees generally run HK$900–3,700 per child and aren’t refunded if your child doesn’t get a place. Reservation deposits, once you’re in, can run as high as HK$150,000 — usually credited against your first year of tuition, but it’s cash you need to have sitting there upfront.

The everyday add-ons. School bus service typically runs HK$8,000–25,000 a year depending on distance and route, and at several schools it’s effectively compulsory if you don’t live within walking distance. Uniforms and learning materials add roughly HK$3,000–6,000 a year. School lunches, where they’re not already bundled into tuition, run HK$4,000–8,000 a year. And extracurriculars — the swim squad, the Mandarin tutoring, the extra music lessons every other kid in the class seems to be doing — can add another HK$5,000–20,000 a year on top of everything else.

None of this is a reason to panic. It’s a reason to ask every one of these numbers out loud before you sign anything, rather than finding out in September.
